If you’re looking to buy an Android phone, you might not have thought about whether it includes a Micro-USB port. The port matters more than you might think.
The whole world may be slowly moving to the modern, reversible USB Type C charging port. But let’s face it: a lot of people still use phones with Micro-USB and will use them for the next couple of years. Micro-USB is still the most commonly used charging standard for electronic gadgets.
Having a phone with a Micro-USB port makes life simpler when you’re out somewhere and don’t have your charger handy. Also, many electronics like wireless headphones, portable speakers, and other gadgets still use Micro-USB to charge. So it might just be easier if you buy a Micro-USB phone, so you can use a single charger to juice all of them.
Here are five Android phones in every price bracket that are worthy purchases and still sport the good ol’ port.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ might be grabbing the limelight these days with their “Infinity Displays”, but beyond that, they’re not that different from their predecessors, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
Samsung’s flagships from the year 2016 still have very vibrant displays, potent internals, great cameras, water and dust resistance, wireless charging, and many more things to like (check our review of the bigger S7 Edge). There are two major differences between the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge: the former has a flat 5-inch screen whereas the latter has a 5.5-inch display that curves at the edges. This makes the S7 Edge nicer in appearance than the S7, but functionally there’s isn’t any big advantage. In fact, the curved edges sometimes make it harder to swipe open menus in apps.
What you will gain if you were to choose the S7 Edge, though, is a satisfyingly long battery life thanks to a bigger 3500mAh battery pack. To be fair, the 3000mAh unit on the regular Galaxy S7 ain’t too shabby either.
Last, but not the least, both these phones have a Micro-USB port and charge faster if you use the bundled fast charger or any Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 compatible charger. But they’ll charge even if you use any generic Micro-USB charger, albeit slower.
The Moto G5 Plus is the fifth iteration of the popular Moto G series, that the now-Lenovo-owned Motorola redefined entry-level smartphones with five years ago. Buy this phone if you care about the software experience, as the Moto G5 Plus already runs near-stock Android 7.0 Nougat. It should at least get the next Android O update too (the same can’t be said about many other entry level phones). Also, some features that Motorola baked in are actually useful, like the double-chop to turn on the flashlight gesture or the double-twist gesture to switch the camera on.
The Moto G5 Plus is powered by a Snapdragon 625 chip and has an ample 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This helps the phone’s interface operate swiftly. With a reasonably large 3000mAh battery and power-sipping internals, the Moto G5 Plus will also not disappoint when it comes to battery life.
The only place where you might find this phone lacking is in the quality of photos taken in low light, which is suggested by almost every review of the device, including CNET’s. But that’s the how it is with smartphones these days: the best cameras are generally reserved for the high-end models.
Last, the Moto G5 Plus comes with a fast charger and (thankfully) still uses the Micro-USB port.
The Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 is a reasonable choice if you prefer a popular brand like Samsung. It uses Samsung’s homegrown Exynos 7870 chip, coupled with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage (which is expandable using a microSD card).
GSMArena’s review of the device suggests this phone has good build quality, battery life, and overall performance. The front camera has its own LED flash, so this phone has a bit of an advantage when taking selfies in absolute darkness. The big missing feature in the Galaxy J7 2016 would be a fingerprint scanner, which has become a real convenient way to unlock your device, instead of using a PIN or password.
Like all other phones on this list, the Galaxy J7 2016 too comes with a Micro-USB port.
The Honor 6X’s highlight feature may be the dual camera sensors at the back, but let’s just get something out of the way: there’s no real advantage to having that additional depth sensor. Although the primary 12 MP camera sensor can take good photos, the 2 MP secondary portrait camera (for background blur, or bokeh, effect) fails to impress. You can read more about the cameras in Android Police’s review of the smartphone.
Beyond this, the phone’s metal build makes it nice to hold. The Honor 6X offers good enough performance, thanks to Huawei’s custom HiSilicon Kirin 655 chip. The Kirin comes with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. The phone also shines in the battery department, with a big 3340mAh power pack that’s capable of powering the phone an entire day on a single charge, with typical use. The fingerprint scanner is pretty fast too.
The Honor 6X’s biggest downside is its software issues. But Huawei included improvements in its Nougat update, which reportedly makes the software experience better. And finally, yup, it’s got the trusty Micro-USB port at the bottom.
The Sony Xperia X released as a premium smartphone. Unfortunately, its mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chip didn’t sell too well. It received a substantial price drop in recent months. This 5-inch screened phone is compact, making it easy to hold and use with one hand. CNET praised its 23 MP camera which also has a dedicated shutter button (you don’t see that much these days). It also comes in striking color options such as Lime Gold and Rose Gold, apart from Black and White.
The only disadvantage of the Xperia X is the middling battery life, due to a relatively small 2620mAh battery. That, and the disabling of the fingerprint scanner, may make you laugh or cry (depending on where you live).
Anyway, if you still have a soft spot for the Sony brand, then the Xperia X offers great value.
What Are the Best Smartphones With Micro-USB?
If you were to ask me, I’d highly recommend the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge or the Moto G5 Plus over the others, simply because they’re great phones overall with flaws that are entirely forgivable.
Do any of these make sense? Let me know in the comments below.
A few months ago I herniated a disc in my lower back — and I’m only 28 years old. Physical trauma or exertion causes most spinal disc issues. Mine came from decades of slouching and excessive pressure on the lumbar region of my spine.
This is why it’s so important to invest in a high-quality office chair that promotes good posture, especially if you sit in front of a computer all day. Even if you feel fine right now, you could be damaging your discs. The thing about spinal disc deterioration is that it tends not to show symptoms until it’s too late.
If you work eight hours a day, five days a week, for 50 weeks a year, that’s 2,000 annual hours of sitting at your computer! A good office chair is expensive, but if you’re going to spend up to one-third of your life sitting in it, you better believe that the cost is well worth it.
Most important, it’s comfortable and ergonomic. Its core equalizer provides the perfect amount of lumbar support depending on how much you recline. It also provides an incredible range of adjustments, particularly in the armrests — they can move up, down, in, out, and all around. All of this was born from Steelcase’s Global Posture Study, and the results speak for themselves.
And it looks clean, minimalistic, and professional. It’s available in eight beautiful and unique colors that can make any office pop with life. Backed by Steelcase’s 12-year warranty.
The Herman Miller Classic Aeron is perhaps the most well-known of the items on this list. It’s usually the first recommendation to pop up when someone starts looking into high-end office chairs. And it was the benchmark standard for all office chairs in the years prior to the Gesture’s debut.
This chair comes in sizes A, B, and C, which are designed for 5’4″/150 pounds, 5’10″/230 pounds, and 6’2″/300 pounds, respectively. It also uses a mesh-like texture for the seat and back — unlike most chairs that rely on foam, fabric, and leather — for breathability and temperature regulation. We also recommend getting the PostureFit model, which provides advanced spinal support.
Aesthetics-wise, it looks like any other office chair, and that’s fine. The only downside is the lack of a headrest. Other than that, it’s excellent. Backed by Herman Miller’s 12-year warranty.
If the Gesture and Aeron are too expensive for you, you can settle for the Steelcase Leap instead. But trust me. You’re not settling. The Leap beats all other chairs found in its price range. In fact, some even prefer the Leap over the Aeron because it provides better spinal support and is more adjustable.
This chair strikes the perfect balance between ergonomics and price. The LiveBack feature molds to the shape of your back, staying firm in the lower back while allowing for a respectable range for reclining. The lumbar support bar can even be moved to fit exactly where you need it, and the armrests can be positioned nearly however you want.
The Leap comes in six different colors, similar to (but not exactly) the same colors as the Gesture. It’s also backed by Steelcase’s 12-year warranty.
If you saw “IKEA” and immediately rolled your eyes, I don’t blame you. Most IKEA chairs are terrible for long-term comfort and spinal health, and we recommend staying away — except in the case of the IKEA Markus. Strangely enough, the Markus is surprisingly good for its price.
The headrest is comfortable, the lumbar support is passable, and the seat isn’t too deep. The mesh back is breathable, the foam seat is comfortable. The reclining mechanism can be locked at any point. And though the armrests aren’t adjustable, you can remove them if they get in the way and they won’t affect the chair’s integrity.
You can get the Markus for $20 cheaper if you opt for fabric rather than leather, bringing it down to $180. But even if you grab the leather version, this is some of the best bang-for-your-buck that you’ll find in the realm of office chairs. If $200 was my upper limit, I’d get this in a heartbeat.
If you want a chair that’ll last several years and stay comfortable the whole time, we don’t recommend going cheaper than the IKEA Markus. You won’t find anything satisfactory. But if you need a chair right now and you need to spend as little as possible, then the Space Seating Professional AirGrid can work.
It’s comfortable at first but will lose that within a year. While mesh backs are breathable, it will stretch and lose its shape over time. Do not get the mesh seat model — it will also stretch and ruin your posture. The armrests are acceptable: plastic, fine in short bursts, and adjustable up and down. You can remove them without affecting the chair’s integrity.
That being said, you won’t find a better chair at this price. Use it as a stopgap for one or two years, and during that time save up for one of the others on this list.
More Tips for a Healthier Spine
What about standing desks? Is a top-notch office chair necessary if you aren’t sitting eight hours a day? The answer is a resounding Yes. It’s actually poor form to use a standing desk 24/7 and one of the worst standing desks mistakes to make. You should alternate standing and sitting, and when sitting, you should do so in a properly designed chair.
Also, remember that you need to adjust the chair to your body. This means finding the ideal chair height, matched to your ideal desk height, all rounded out with your ideal monitor height and monitor distance. We’ve covered all of this in our guide to setting up an efficient workstation.
If you have a hunched back from long-term improper posture, start doing this 3-minute stretch right away. The best time to start fixing posture is always right now. Good posture isn’t just important for feeling healthier, it’s also crucial to feeling more confident — and you can’t put a price tag on either.
How’s your current posture? Are you ready to upgrade your office chair to one that’s worthy of supporting your spine? Are there any great chairs we missed? Let us know in the comments!
Headphones are essential for a variety of uses. Whether for gaming, making calls, or listening to music, headphones remain crucial for audio consumption.
However, a quality set of headphones may fetch a hefty price. But superb sound does not demand breaking the bank. Looking for a pair of cheap headphones? These are the best cheap headphones you can get.
Can Cheap Headphones Not Suck?
Cheap often carries a negative connotation. Because it’s usually associated with quality, this makes sense. In this instance, we’re defining cheap as inexpensive. Therefore, we’ll explore inexpensive headphones with a low price tag that don’t sacrifice audio quality or performance. Need help selecting a style? Find out if in-, on-, or over-ear headphones are right for you.
Check out the top inexpensive headphones available!
Among budget Bluetooth headphones, the Jabra Move wireless stereo headset ranks among the best available. In their review, TechRadar praised the Jabra Move for its lightweight, rich sound quality, and striking design elements.
However, for its audio and aesthetic excellence, the Move fails to isolate noise well. Further, there’s minor sound leakage. Ultimately, its strengths outweigh the weaknesses. You may also consider the Creative Sound Blaster Jam Bluetooth headset. Like the Jabra Move, the Sound Blaster Jam is lightweight with supreme ergonomics.
For the true wireless experience of AirPods minus the cost, check out the Soundmoov 316T. These AirPod alternatives offer completely wireless operation. Along with the Soundmoov 316T earbuds, there’s a storage box with a charging function built in. Moreover, the 316T offers several software features, including a “twins” mode. With this, two earbuds can play audio from the same device. In single mode, you pick the left or right channel for each earbud.
Yet as Nerd Techy reveals, the Soundmoov 316T lacks the rich sound quality of studio headphones. For earbuds, and AirPod alternatives at that, the Soundmoov 316T delivers decent audio. But its audio lacks the fullness of larger headphones. Still, for the price, these are easily the best truly wireless headphones you’ll find.
The TaoTronics TT-BH19 wireless earbuds clock in under $30. Because of their lightweight design, commendable sound quality, and an in-line remote. Constructed of metal, the TT-BH19 are resistant to wear and tear. Additionally, the headphones come with loads of accessories including three sets of ear tips and hooks. There’s also a carrying case and USB charging cable.
Like other earbuds, the TaoTronics don’t compare to gargantuan studio headphones. Nevertheless, the sound quality for the price is superb. Unlike many earbuds, these don’t fall out easily. Plus, bass remains punchy.
Whereas many noise-canceling headphones retail for a significant price, the Paww WaveSound 3 boast active noise canceling in a wireless package. These headphones operate via Bluetooth but also include a 3.5mm wired connection and even airplane adapter. Further, the Paww WaveSound 3 comes with a carrying case.
With a convenient form factor and both wireless and wired connection options as well as active noise cancellation, the Paww WaveSound 3 is easily the best budget noise-canceling headphones. Because they slide in around $100 or less, it’s tough to beat the WaveSound 3. Admittedly, Paww’s noise-canceling cans don’t compete with Bose premium offerings. However, for the money, the WaveSound 3 provide pleasing sound quality and a comprehensive feature set.
Bluetooth wireless and analog connections
Includes airplane adapter
Active noise cancellation
Better noise cancellation available at higher prices
Although Monoprice is a name synonymous with affordable cables, Monoprice also makes a spectacular, inexpensive set of noise-canceling headphones. Because the Monoprice Hi-Fi doesn’t sacrifice sound quality for its savings, it’s easily among the best cheap headphones you can buy.
For under $100, the Monoprice Hi-Fi active noise-canceling headphones offer a phenomenal value. With 35dB passive sound isolation and 92 percent linear reduction in noise pressure, they’re a steal. But sound quality doesn’t match high-end noise-canceling sets, or even many mid-range budget picks. They’re corded only, not wireless. But at sub-$100, it’s tough to complain.
Active noise cancellation
Sound quality doesn’t compete with mid-range and high-end noise-canceling headphones
While Bose typically connotes pricey but exquisite-sounding headphones, the QuietComfort 25 balance price and performance. At under $200, the Bose QuietComfort 25 fall at the upper end of the cheap headphones spectrum.
In their take, Trusted Reviews lauded the QuietComfort 25 for their construction quality, amazing noise cancellation, and rich sound. However, if you’re willing to step up in price, better cans may be had. Moreover, these are only corded, not wireless. The Sony XB950N1 noise canceling over the ear headphones also present excellent value at a similar price point.
Rich audio profile
Great noise cancellation
Solid build quality
Sound quality doesn’t compete with high-end noise canceling headphones
Over-the-ear headphones offer supremely immersive audio — because they encompass the ear. Audio Technica’s ATH-M30X slides in under $100 for an awesome pair of cans. In its review, Sound Review lauded the ATH-M30X for its bass performance, balanced audio profile, and comfort. Plus, there’s passive noise isolation.
However, at high frequencies, Sound Review noted slight distortion. Plus, the cable is a bit too lengthy as well as non-detachable. Nevertheless, with its extreme comfort, affordability, and balanced sound, the Audio-Technica ATH-M30X ranks among the best cheap headphones on the market.
A name synonymous with audiophile quality, Sennheiser offers premium sounding over-the-ear headphones at a reasonable price in its HD 206 headphones. The Sennheiser HD 206 clocks in under $100 and come with a bevy of features. Onboard the HD 206, you’ll find hypo-allergenic earpads. While the HD 206 sport solid construction, they’re lightweight enough to provide comfort during long sessions.
Sealed earcups minimize noise bleed while reducing ambient noise. Bass is punchy, yet the overall soundscape remains balanced. Reviewers praised the noise reduction, fit, and look of the Sennheiser HD 206. Unfortunately, there’s no in-line mic. Considering the major uses for headphones with mics, from gaming to phone calls, this is a massive oversight. Nevertheless, for sub-$50, the Sennheiser HD 206 yields fantastic quality at a super low price.
Want the quality of $100-plus headphones for under $50? Check out the JVC HA-RX700. This over-the-ear style pair of cans. In their review, CNET praised the HA-RX700 as comfortable, rugged, and with a lush soundstage. These JVC headphones are a tad heavy, clocking in at 11.2 ounces. The audio cable is non-detachable. Despite its girth, the HA-RX700 remains comfortable during long sessions.
However, it’s sound quality where the JVC HA-RX700 truly shines. Onboard, you’ll find an impedance rated at 48 ohms. CNET describes its sound as soft and warm for a pleasant fullness. The audio profile is superbly balanced. In fact, it’s mostly minor details which result in a lower price. For instance, don’t expect hinged or fold-flat earcups. These features, while standard on most premium and even mid-range headphones are lacking on the HA-RX700. Nevertheless, it’s tough to beat this JVC offering for the price and performance.
Although many headphones, especially Bluetooth sets, come with mics built in, some mics boast better audio pick up than others. For gaming or even frequent VoIP calls, it’s best to have a pair of headphones with a boom mic. The Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50 is a stereo, wired headset with powerful 40mm diameter speakers. A speaker impedance of 32 ohms provides solid audio playback which is paired with over-the-ear cups. It’s compatible with consoles such as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as PCs, and mobile devices.
Windows Central appreciated the comfort afforded by the Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50, as well as its commendable build quality. Still, it’s a pretty no-frills headset. Many headsets with mics sport 5.1 or 7.1 emulated surround sound. Yet the Ear Force Recon 50 is limited to stereo. Ultimately, it’s an excellent sounding stereo headset that’s pleasant to wear for long periods of time, and rocking a great microphone.
With its microphone and matrix surround sound, the Logitech G430 is a top pick as a pair of cheap headphones with a mic. PC World lauded the G430 as a surround sound headset that’s perfect for any budget. There are in-line volume and mic control, 7.1 emulated surround sound, and a lightweight package.
However, PC Mag disliked the colorways and criticized lack of customizable G-Keys. At under $50 for a pair of 7.1 surround sound headphones with a mic, the Logitech G430 is a spectacular miced up headphones.
The Kotion Each G9000 headset with a mic is ridiculously amazing for its price. It’s easily the best set of cans with a mic at under $30. Because the G9000 contains a 3.5mm combo cable with a headphone and mic cable, it’s compatible with almost any platform.
Like most headphones in its class, the G9000 rocks over-the-ear designs, and there’s an LED light that’s USB powered. While the G9000 is fairly decent, music playback arrives slightly muddy. The mic captures audio well, but it’s stiff which can be a benefit when avoiding it falling down. Unlike poseable mics, it’s not terribly adaptable to a variety of positions. Overall, the Kotion Each G9000 is an awesome pair of cheap headphones with a mic for gaming, calls, and more.
With an in-line mic and controller, the Panasonic ErgoFit in-ear headphones stand out as some of the most affordable headphones on the market. Tom’s Guide enjoyed the balance of price and performance, also noting that the ErgoFit are incredibly comfortable.
Unfortunately, the Panasonic ErgoFit are conducive to cord tangles. Similarly, they aren’t terribly durable. While there are an in-line mic and controller, there’s no volume control. Though its audio profile is solid, particularly at its less than $20 price point, the mids and highs could have been more pronounced. At the retail value, the Panasonic ErgoFit are easily the best cheap in-ear headphones available.
At less than $30, the Brainwavz Delta Silver is incredible for being in-ear buds. These cheap headphones feature a cord that’s impressively tangle-resistant. Though many earbuds may be prone to falling out, the Brainwavz Delta Silver fit extremely well.
While Tom’s Guide loved the fit, price, and cord as well as sound quality, their review noted that the Delta Silver are occasionally muddy. It’s particularly noticeable in the lows. With a solid combination of price and performance, the Brainwavz Delta Silver provide exquisite audio and awesome build quality.
Though Anker may be best known for its external battery packs, the Anker SoundBuds wireless headphones are among the best on the market — and high-quality, cheap Bluetooth headphones are hard to come by. These in-ear buds clock in at a price where it’s difficult to find a great pair of wired earbuds. With Bluetooth, an in-line mic, and IPX5 ruggedness for sweatproof use, Anker’s SoundBuds are a fantastic pickup.
CNET enjoyed the Anker SoundBuds for their fantastic build quality which, despite the price, doesn’t feel inexpensive. The sound is commendable, especially for the price. There’s an included carrying case, and the headphones stick to one another magnetically. Unfortunately, bass is rather overpowering, and the treble isn’t smooth at high volume. Still, at the cost, it’s tough to beat the Anker SoundBuds for their wireless connectivity, rugged qualities, and audio profile.
Great build quality
Good audio profile
Includes carrying case
Bass is overpowering
Treble lacks smoothness at high volumes
Final Thoughts on the Best Cheap Headphones
Although the thought of quality headphones conjures up astronomically large price tags, inexpensive headphones that don’t overly sacrifice on audio quality abound. Which set is best depends on your needs. For working out, a pair of Bluetooth earbuds offers a solid feature set. Over-the-ear headphones and noise-canceling cans boast top-notch audio quality. Gamers and VoIP users will want a set of headphones with a boom mic.
Ultimately, there’s easily a set of cheap headphones with an awesome audio profile to provide quality sound at an affordable price.
A smartphone is only as good as its battery. After all, without any power, it’s just a good-looking brick. While most modern smartphones have decent battery life, here’s a list of the longest-lasting handsets today.
Naturally, you shouldn’t buy a phone purely for the battery life alone. So for this list, we’ve also taken into consideration the general performance of the device. And of course, you can always buy any of the top phones you like. The Samsung Galaxy S8 series, the LG G6, the OnePlus 5, and other flagship phones all have good battery life. In case you need more juice, you can also get one of the best power banks to extend the battery.
But sometimes, all you want it is a phone that won’t run out of battery at inopportune moments. If that’s the case, get one of these long-lasting babies.
Every battery test out there has crowned the Lenovo P2 as the champion. The gargantuan battery and Qualcomm’s power-efficient Snapdragon 625 processor form the perfect combo to last for a long time.
The P2 is generally a good phone, with good performance, 32 GB of internal memory, and 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM (depending on which model you choose). Even with the large 5.5-inch screen, the 5100 mAh battery will make sure you never run out of juice.
The Lenovo P2 also uses a proprietary quick charging technology, for which you need to use the Lenovo charger from the box. You won’t be able to use a standard QC-compliant quick charger.
Unfortunately, the phone isn’t available in the U.S., but you can get it in almost all other markets. U.S. residents will need to rely on international sites like AliExpress. If you are, remember our AliExpress purchasing tips. And make sure it works on your network. But for most American citizens, you are better off buying the Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom.
The Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom has been earning plaudits as the longest-lasting phone in the U.S. today. And why shouldn’t it? Like the Lenovo P2, this is a 5000 mAh battery coupled with a Snapdragon 625 processor.
But despite a battery that easily lasts a day, that isn’t this phone’s claim to fame. The Zoom is among the few smartphones to offer optical zoom (and not digital), with two lenses that focus at different ranges. And it can also shoot images in the RAW format if you want.
A few reviewers and users have noted that the Zenfone’s custom Android skin, Asus ZenUI 5.0, is a pain. It stutters and lags often, so you might want to replace it soon. Heck, you can get the stock Android experience without root too.
If you want great battery life and the assurance of the Samsung brand name, look no further than the Galaxy A9 Pro. It might be a year old, but it’s still the company’s longest-lasting battery.
The large battery is a necessity given the humongous 6-inch screen it sports. And there’s the fantastic Snapdragon 652 processor, which is great for gaming. You can enjoy playing on this phone’s large screen for many hours.
Most people aren’t fans of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, and we even suggest that you replace Samsung apps with better alternatives. But in the case of the Galaxy A9 Pro, Samsung has done a good job of optimizing the software for best battery performance, so don’t mess with it too much.
The list here includes those phones that have plenty of real-world buyer reviews as well as tests by technology bloggers and journalists. A few phones haven’t got that treatment yet, but still seem like they might be worth keeping an eye out on when you make your decision.
Xiaomi’s first Mi Max bowled over everyone with its battery life. Mi Max 2 again has a 5300 mAh battery, and also a more power-efficient processor than its predecessor. The reviews have started rolling in, and it looks like this one is the longest-lasting phone from Xiaomi yet.
How Much Is Enough?
How many mAh do you look for in an Android smartphone’s battery life? Obviously, the bigger the better, but is there a minimum limit that you won’t go below?
Laptops, unlike desktop PCs, are hard to upgrade. That’s why it makes sense to spend a few extra bucks and buy something that is a little more future-proof.
Generally speaking, you can now get excellent future-proof laptops, if you are willing to spend up to $1,000. From laptops according to your major to even non-Windows notebooks, a four-figure budget meets any needs you have and protect against immediate obsolescence.
We checked out reviews of several machines from different tech pundits, and tried a few ourselves as well, to come up with this final list of the best laptops you can buy for less than $1,000 in 2017.
It’s a new year but the Dell XPS 13 continues to be the best Windows ultrabook you can buy. Dell has launched a new model with Intel’s 7th generation processor, but that costs far more than the 1,000 dollar budget. Instead, last year’s model still offers excellent bang for your buck.
The 2016 Dell XPS 13 has a 256GB SSD and an Intel Core i5 processor, along with 8GB of RAM. It has a thin-bezel design that packs a 13-inch screen in the same size that other laptops have an 11-inch screen. And it’s a laptop that consistently ranks high among those with the best battery life.
If you can extend your budget slightly, then spend an extra $60 to buy the Core i7 version. The faster processor is worth it.
If your laptop mostly sits on a desk at your office, a large-screen notebook makes sense. But you still don’t want to compromise on portability, right? The Lenovo Yoga 720 strikes the right balance between the two.
With a powerful Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD, the performance is guaranteed to be fast always. Lenovo has also added a USB Type-C port, which the Yoga 720 can also charge from. The claimed battery life is 8 hours, but most tests saw it lasting longer than that.
As part of the Yoga series, you get a flip-over touchscreen to turn your device into a tablet. It’s a little heavy at 4.6 pounds, but remember, a 15-inch laptop isn’t something you expect to use much while on the move.
Note that there’s a 13.3-inch version of the Yoga 720 too, but we can’t recommend that at the moment. The Yoga 720’s higher battery life and louder speakers make it superior.
In the world of flipovers and detachable 2-in-1 laptops, the Asus Transformer Pro stands alone. With classy design and top-notch specifications, it’s hard to believe the cost is under a thousand bucks.
Weighing less than 2 pounds, the high-resolution 12.6-inch tablet (2160×1440 pixels) is supremely portable. It also feels premium to hold with its aluminum body. And you can use a pen for handwriting and annotations too. The keyboard similarly has a metal build, making it feel more sturdy than what you get with the Microsoft Surface Pro.
If you thought all this would mean a reduction in hardware, think again. There’s 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD shoved in there. And an Intel Core i7 processor, which is astounding for a hybrid at this price.
The only real issue with the Transformer Pro is the battery life. It gives you about 6 hours of usage before needing to recharge. That’s not bad at all, of course, but it’s not as high as other 2-in-1s.
A good gaming laptop within $1,000 means compromises. And the compromise is usually either in the graphics card or the screen quality.
The best graphics card you’ll get is the same: the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (or Titanium). Don’t settle for anything less than the Titanium, the graphics performance boost is massive.
For the screen, gamers are usually split between two types of panels: TN and IPS. TN offers faster response times, while IPS has more accurate colors and better viewing angles (especially with sunlight). On a laptop, I’d say IPS wins the race, and that’s why the Acer Aspire VX 15 should be your choice.
The Aspire VX 15 is also packed with excellent hardware, including a Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB dedicated VRAM.
Looking to replace your old desktop PC with a new laptop? You probably still want that big-screen experience though, along with powerful performance. The HP Envy 17 will do its best to ensure you never miss your old PC.
The large full HD screen also offers a touchscreen, but you probably won’t use that much. What matters is that it’s an IPS screen with wide viewing angles, so multiple people can see what’s playing on it.
A Core i7 processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 1TB hard drive should take care of all your needs. There’s even a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card for light gaming. And a good old DVD writer too.
At $1,000, you can ditch Windows and grab an Apple laptop. The new 13-inch MacBook Air is still an excellent value laptop, and perhaps better than most alternatives with Windows.
It comes with a Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD. And on macOS, that’s more than enough for most users. It works with the newest macOS version for years to come, and the battery life is top-notch.
In case you don’t mind buying a refurbished laptop, then check the deals at the best places for refurbished Apple MacBooks. You might find a much better purchase there, as long as it has been certified refurbished by Apple itself.
Google has jumped into the high-end laptop game with the new Pixelbook. It’s still too fresh to figure out any potential problems with it or its longevity. So chalk this up as an early adopter’s option.
The Pixelbook racked up some good reviews, with pundits praising the overall package. The taller 12-inch screen with the 3:2 aspect ratio (as opposed to the usual 16:9) scored praise, as has the premium aluminum body. And remember, you can run Android apps on Chromebooks now.
But there is one major common complaint: the battery life. For a 2-in-1 device, all reviewers are disappointed with the battery life, claiming about 6-8 hours of usage. That’s not bad for a laptop, of course, but Chromebooks tend to last longer than that.
Whether you’re looking for a pure Ultrabook, a taste of Mac, or some 2-in-1, the $1,000 budget will give you an excellent long-term purchase. In fact, I’d say this price range is just right to get power and performance without it seeming like you spent too much.
Which of these $1,000 laptops do you like the most? Do you have any other recommendations that we missed?
